Starting at Castleton car park (GR149830), cross the road and turn left. At the church turn right and head up towards the rear cottages. Look for the Cave Dale signpost and follow the short lane to the gate. Enter Cave Dale (GR150827) and shead up this fairly moderate hill. Views to Peveril Castle from cave Dale, one and two.

After 3/4 mile it starts to level out more. Follow the wall on your right up to a gate. Go through and follow any small yellow signs that you may see. These will eventually bring you to another gate. Cross over the field to the far corner. Climb over the stile here to a meeting of paths (GR136813). Climb another stile and turn right along a broad track for just over 1/4 mile. Come to a footpath sign near a gate. Turn right here (GR126815) and follow the path downwards across two more stiles.

Follow the path as it starts to descend to a road after around 1 mile. Cross the road (B6061) (GR126826) and climb the stile. This area is known as windy knoll. Carry on walking for nearly 1/2 mile with the wall on your left untill the path climbs steeply for 200 yards and you willl come to another road (A625) which you must cross (GR125832).

The path takes you to another stile and some steps. Walk these few steps and you will reach the road below Mam Tor. Go through the final two gates and then you will start climbing the last steps which will lead you up to Mam Tor (517M) (GR127836). You will almost certainly get fine views here all year round. Views to Edale and Hollins Cross can be seen from here.

The walk continues downwards from here heading NNE along the ridge. The path comes to Hollins Cross (GR136845), a crossroad in the path. Turn right here and take the left most path down the side of the hill. This is quite steep so care must be taken. You'll reach Hollowford Road (GR141842). Turn left here for a 3/4 mile walk back to Castleton.

Bear right once back in Castleton and you will find the car park.
